Work-Life

Brandon

Hello, and welcome back to the employee spotlight. My name is Brandon Ward, and I am a business development strategist here Remotish. Today, we're talking to one of our newest employees, Robby Coles. Robby is a digital project strategist here, and we're super excited to have him on board! So Robby, can you tell us a little bit about your role at Remoteish?

Robby

Sure, it's great to be here talking to everyone today. I am a digital project strategist focused on RevOps. My job really is to work within HubSpot and work with clients to ensure they're getting the most out of this tool that they've just purchased. So, I work with their teams to train them on the system, get them up to speed with how the system works and make sure that their teams are all aligned and using it properly.

Brandon

What's an average workday look like for you right now?

Robby

So, my day starts fairly early. My little dog, Theo, usually wakes me up around 6:30 in the morning to go outside. I tend to like to start my days early with a cup of coffee, you know, sitting on the couch, watching the news, checking emails and getting up to date with everything that's going on in the industry and reading various blogs. Then, I dive into my client work. Usually I bounce around from three or four different areas of my apartment, from the couch to the dining room table to the kitchen counter to my office: kind of always all over the place. I tend to save the later hours in the day for any of my creative work. Anything that I need to do that's more strategic and requires the creative side of my brain. I do my best technical work in the midday.

Brandon

That's one of the upsides of the flex time component, right? At Remotish you can kind of shape your day, but it's built around your optimal version of what that day may look like. So, what's your favorite HubSpot tool or thing about HubSpot?

Robby

I don't know if anybody will have ever said this, but I love the campaign attribution aspect for me. I love how they tag everything that you do to a campaign in the marketing hub. That allows you to have very, very detailed reporting from all aspects of your marketing system. I mean, I'm a numbers guy and I use numbers to tell a story. When I can help a client understand all the data they can obtain through the system, and then see what story that data can tell and how they can use it to craft their strategy- that's a great moment for me.

Brandon

Attribution can be either the marketer's nightmare or dream, depending on the tools that they use. So I like that.

Life Life

Brandon

So we're going to switch gears here a little bit. We've talked about work life, so now let's talk about life, life. What's the best thing to you about remote life? Because we were all passionate about it here, at Remotish, even before COVID.

Robby

I'm a weird mix of introvert and extrovert. I get a lot of my energy from spending time alone, but I love working within a team and getting to spend time on calls working with clients. But what people don't see is right before I jump on a call, I'm switching the laundry over or I'm making the bed or fixing another cup of coffee. I really like the flexibility that comes with remote life. I'm in my space and I can control my environment. When the pandemic hit, I was not working remotely, but my home- my environment was the only thing that I could control in this crazy world that we were living in. So now even as offices are starting to open up and people are starting to go back into these office spaces, I cannot see myself doing that anymore because I like my environment too much.

Brandon

I hear you, man. I feel very much the same and it's funny, you mention that. I'm very similar in that introvert and extrovert component even though I'm in a sales driven role, as you know. But I recharge by being alone. I hear you. It's nice. It's sad that we had to go through this crazy pandemic situation, but there are a lot of great things about working from home for people that enjoy the comfort of their own space. It's awesome. All right, so what blogs, podcasts, or groups would you recommend to our readers and listeners? Out of all the things that are out there, you're a big content guy. I know you love content.

Robby

Yeah! So first of all, yeah, I'm a big content person. I'm always reading the HubSpot blog. Not just the ones written by the in-house team, but the ones written from partner agencies, and I find a lot of really good information there. I do frequent some HubSpot competitor blogs, but I'm not going to mention them by name because, you know. Hardly any of my podcasts are business related. I will be very honest there. I do listen to Crime Junkies. That's one of my favorites. Brain Candy is another one. Drama Queens, which is ridiculous because it's about the TV show One Tree Hill. It's fantastic. And then I listen to a show called Tell Me, by Ellen Pompeo, the star of Gray's Anatomy. She breaks down social issues and political issues so it's really fascinating. And yeah, they talk about Gray's Anatomy, which is a bonus; it’s my guilty pleasure.

Brandon

That's a commitment. So how about when you're not HubSpotting for our clients? Tell us a little bit about what you do when you're not wearing your Remotish hat.

Robby

I drink a lot of wine. I'm mostly a red and Cabernet fan. Sometimes Pinot Noir. I dabble with white wines, and I've never met a bottle of champagne I didn't love. I love cocktails. I love mixology. That's a lot of fun for me. I also have a goofy little dog named Theo who takes up a lot of my time. My husband lives in Vienna, Austria, so I’m always talking to him throughout the day. When he's here, we like to go out and do things. I love to travel. My husband and I have been all over the world. He's a commercial airline pilot based in Vienna. We've been to Iceland, Brazil, The Philippines, China, Morocco, and South Africa; all over. So traveling is a huge passion.

Brandon

And that's how you guys bridge that continental gap, though, right? The ability to travel with ease. I know it's been challenging as of late.

Robby

Yeah, COVID obviously shut things down for us for a while, for almost two years, but we're starting to get back into traveling to see each other. Before COVID, we saw each other, about every three weeks. I love my husband a lot, but if we lived in the same house, one of us would end up on the evening news.

Brandon

Very nice. Well, and you recently saw him too. It was how long again, it was a very long period of time?

Robby

It was 23 months apart. We had issues with getting him here because of COVID testing, restrictions, airline issues, and family issues. Once he finally got here,

Brandon

So Robby, do you have a personal motto or mantra? What would it be?

Robby

“Remember who you are and what you stand for.” My dad said that to me every day growing up.

Brandon

That's very cool that you carry that on. What about your guilty pleasure?

Robby

Trashy reality TV like The Real World, The Challenge, Road Rules, Grey's Anatomy, you know, I just like pure trash. I mean, there's no value to it other than you can sit there for three hours and forget that it's been three hours.

Brandon

So there is some value in it.

Robby

Yeah. And Law & Order Special Victims Unit. There's always a marathon on somewhere; that's a great way to kill a Saturday.

Brandon

It really does seem like there's always one of those shows on at some point I swear. Do you have a unique talent?

Robby

I can whistle like a bird!

Brandon

Yep. I can hear it! This is the last question here we’ve got for you. Where do you live and why do you love living there?

Robby

I live in a little community outside Nashville, Tennessee, called Bellevue. I have lived here almost my entire life. I was born and raised here. I did move to Miami for a while, and to New York City for a while, both for career paths, but I ended up back here. I live about five minutes from my mom, about seven minutes from my grandparents, and about 10 minutes from the house that I grew up in. If you lay the map on top of each other, my apartment sits on top of the Old Navy that I used to work in that was torn down in 2012. One of my first jobs was folding jeans, and now I live on top of that spot.

Brandon

Very cool. It's pretty full circle. I've got to say Old Navy is kind of my jam, man.

Robby

Everything I'm wearing right now is Old Navy. Literally, it's such good quality for a great price.

Brandon

Yeah, you're welcome, Old Navy for the plugs. This is not sponsored by Old Navy. Just saying. Not yet. Awesome, Robby. Well, I appreciate your time today. That concludes our employee spotlight. I want to thank our listeners for tuning in. I also want to thank Robby Coles for sharing his interesting professional journey and personal fun facts with us today.

Robby

Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much for having me.
